Introducing Walden Pond 3.0!
A few thoughtful words from Roxana and Pauline on this exciting new adventure 🙂
Roxana:
Dear Walden Pond Families,
With huge excitement, I am writing to share the news…Walden Pond 3.0 has officially begun! And I am introducing to you, Pauline Rubio, likely Miss Pauline to the kids, who will be very ably taking over the reins of the colorful, beloved house on Avenue B!
To arrive at today, we need to take a short journey back to 1985, when Miss Dottie’s dream of a “little school for the arts” became reality. Walden Pond in San Antonio was born, and its mission has always been clear—joyful learning through the arts! Henry David Thoreau said it best, “Joy is the condition of life,” and it couldn’t be truer. Miss Dottie grew Walden Pond, nurtured thousands of young minds and left an indelible mark on our community.
Walden Pond 2.0 (my era) began 13 years ago, with a leap of faith and steadfast support from my wonderful husband and children, and it has been the “job” of a lifetime. Untold numbers of smiles, countless colorful memories and so, so, so many amazing young children and families. Joyful learning, to quote Miss Dottie, was indeed accomplished. But not without the help and support of many talented and loving teachers. You know their names—Carlisle, Danika, Marisa, Jessica, Tisa, Sarina, and so many others—and it took this incredible team to make the magic happen. To my teachers, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all. And, finally, to the families who shared your children with me—each of them touched my heart, and I can’t tell you how much fun it has been! Thank you, thank you!
Pauline will bring to Walden Pond her own sense of fun, creativity, compassion and care. She is wonderful and kind and smart. In fact, Pauline is a former Walden Pond student herself (under Miss Dottie) and her fun-loving daughter, Lillian, is a current student. I have no doubt that as the new director and owner of Walden Pond, Pauline will guide its growth, adding her fresh ideas to the established curriculum and making new amazing journeys. She is passionate and committed to opening Walden Pond’s doors to all.
To Pauline and WP 3.0—ready, set, go! Cheers to new beginnings!
With love & appreciation….and HAVE FUN!
Miss Roxana
Pauline:
Bienvenido a Walden Pond 3.0!
I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time with your children at our beloved nature-loving, arts’ home-away-from-home, child-oasis. Nestled amongst the quaintness of Avenue B, Henry David Thoreau would likely not have it any other way.
As Roxana mentioned, I am a former Walden Pond student myself as a pre-schooler in the late 1980s and early 90s. I remember Ms. Dottie and the “woods room” vividly. The school made a lasting impact on my life having fond memories at such a young age. Not only fondly, but impactful.
I have found my calling, recently devoting my time to your littles! I am academically published in the criticalness of accessibility and public funding for the arts in early childhood education. It is known that without exercising the right side of the brain throughout our childhood years, we can expect a workforce lacking innovation. Solely focusing on STEM will never allow us to break the cycle of logical thinking coupled with the essential aspect of creative problem solving. Therein lies the impact Walden Pond has on our community and accessibility to arts education.
To have gained the trust from our cherished Roxana is an honor I accept most humbly. Her enthusiasm, humor, and positivity are most certainly infectious. Every day I left learning from her gave me a little more pep in my step and boy oh boy do I have big shoes to fill! Her spirit will never leave our beloved Walden Pond, and I am proud to dedicate the backyard as “Roxana’s Garden!”
Finally, I would like to introduce my Aunt, Lily Rubio, who has devoted over 25 years as Art Director at St. George Episcopal School. She will join me in this adventure and next chapter of Walden Pond. We both graciously look forward to spending time with your children and wish Roxana our most heart-felt well wishes on her next adventures!
Pauline
